Tales of a Writing Teen

When you think of teenagers, do you think of lazy, punk, kids, who are spoiled brats and do nothing? I want to change your idea of teens. We're determined. We're motivated. We're busier than ever. We have dreams. Mine is to be a writer, and I'm working toward it.

Titles

I don't know if I mentioned it here, but I received a rejection on my partial by Kathryn Green. Bummer. She didn't get caught up in the character's voices, which made me doubt the character's likability. Thankfully, a friend at Absolute Write read my first chapter and seemed to enjoy it, which gave me a self confidence boost.

Now onto the main event of this post, tiles. My novel, NORMALITY, INDIVIDUALITY, AND PERFECTION, is a book for YA, and the title isn't really YA friendly. I've received much negative feedback on it, so I finally brainstormed and came up with some titles. Comment and tell me your favorite. Tell me which catches your eye and intrigues you, which would be best for the YA market, etc. If I send out more queries, it will be with the new title.

1. NORMALITY, INDIVIDUALITY, AND PERFECTION (CURRENT TITLE)
2. GEEK TRIO
3. TRIO OF GEEKS
4. THREE GEEKS, ONE WILD YEAR
5. GEEKS WITH GOALS
6. GIFTED, SUPPOSEDLY
7. WE'RE GIFTED, SUPPOSEDLY
8. SMARTIES
9. FASCINATING: THE LIVES OF NERDS
10. EIGHTH GRADE THROUGH GEEK COLORED GLASSES
11. GEEKS VS. MIDDLE SCHOOL
12. GEEKS TAKE ON THE WORLD
13. MY ASPIRATION, MY FASCINATION, MY AWESOME EIGHTH GRADE YEAR

Thanks for your feedback.

These two are my pick of the litter. However, number ten might also work with EIGHTH GRADE replaced by LIFE or deleted entirely. Good luck. Titles are tough.

10. EIGHTH GRADE THROUGH GEEK COLORED GLASSES
11. GEEKS VS. MIDDLE SCHOOL

I like #s 4 and 8. Number 4 has a definite "fun" sound to it, and piques my interest. Number 8 is simple, easy to remember, and gets the point across.

Good luck! I still haven't found a decent title for my 2nd. Luckily I have several thousand words to go before it matters...

What about SOME GIFT ?

I'll agree with Bill on all counts.

'Through Geek Colored Glasses' in itself is kind of catchy.

I found you from Rachel and I just wanted to say WAY TO GO! You're fourteen?!!? And you're already querying.

I haven't even read your stuff, and just read this first post, but you will succeed... you are determined and that's more than half of it, I think.

I don't know what your novel is about, but I think I like #10.

Keep on working on it! You'll do great!

I liked #9- FASCINATING: THE LIVES OF NERDS. I wish you luck wtih your venture. Don't give up hope. I started writing a novel at the age of 16 but then everyone thought I was crazy.

Personally, I like #6. It's short and to the point.

I don't know whether #8 might have some conflicts as it's the name of two different types of candy. Maybe using this title wouldn't conflict but it's what came into my head when I read it.

Hey, I thought of you when I saw this:

(Sorry about the plain link, not so great w/ the HTML) Not sure if you have access to other resources in your town, if you don't this would be great for you.

Unfortunately, I miss the upper cutoff date by two years. Wish I had known about this several years ago!

I love #10.

(I'm thinking "Geek-Colored" should probably be written with a hyphen, though.)

I like Trio of Geeks. Good for you to pursue writing with such passion. I wish I had done that when I was fourteen.

Stop worrying about the title. Publishers reserve the right to change a title, a right they'll certainly excercise, and you'll have little or no control over it. Seriously, stop worrying. Just leave it as it is or pick something shorter ("Gifted, Supposedly"). Your "negative feedback" people are encouraging you to nitpick. Very dangerous. Ignore them. The writing and story matter so much more as to render the title immaterial this early in the process.

wow *name here...don't know if you want it posted* you got a lot of comments. coolness! I like the title you already have, but I also like Three Geeks, One wild year. It like brings out that the year is interesting so if i saw it on a shelf i would definately want to read it...not just cuz my best friend wrote it.

As someone who was a bit of a geek in high school, I've got to say my favorite is, "Gifted, Supposedly."

9. FASCINATING: THE LIVES OF NERDS!!!!!

I love that one! Use it! I will love you either way, but I'd read a book with that title. It's funny. : )

Interesting. I don't think I read YA when I was a teen but I think:

1. NORMALITY, INDIVIDUALITY, AND PERFECTION (CURRENT TITLE)
sounds like a text book on personality or something along those lines

These other ones sound like they could be fun:
2. GEEK TRIO
4. THREE GEEKS, ONE WILD YEAR
12. GEEKS TAKE ON THE WORLD

Oooh I like Gooch's suggestion
Modify #10 to: THROUGH GEEK COLORED GLASSES

Hi!
You do not know me, but I just accidentally found myself here. OK, nr. 3 is my favourite. I must admit...And I must admit one little secret: I like making titles too. But I just do not have stories to them. And...I am much older than you are. But keep writing anyway. You have the talent.

Call it Geek Colored Glasses.

That's catchy, short and gives an idea what the pov will be.

Best of luck. At fourteen to have more than one book finished is something impressive.
